Florence Daily News uses generative artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool to support its editorial work. This document explains how AI is integrated into our newsroom processes and the limits we set to ensure accuracy, transparency and accountability.
Florence Daily News uses artificial intelligence tools in compliance with the EU Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act).
1. Human editorial control
All articles published on Florence Daily News originate from:
- verified events, official sources or publicly available documents, or
- ideas and commentary developed by human contributors.
No story is ever produced solely by an AI system. Human editorial judgment guides news selection, fact-checking, rewriting and final approval.
2. How AI assists our work
Generative AI tools may be used at specific stages of our editorial workflow, including:
- summarising or organising information gathered from multiple sources;
- generating structured draft articles based on material collected and verified by our editorial team;
- improving clarity, language, and structure especially when contributors are not native English speakers;
- drafting headline options;
- preparing posts for social media;
- supporting explanatory work, such as timelines, background notes, or contextual summaries.
AI tools are used as editorial support instruments. They do not replace reporting, verification, or editorial judgment.
In all cases, human editors review, fact-check, and edit the content before publication. Final responsibility for accuracy, fairness, and compliance with our editorial standards remains entirely with our editorial team.
3. No automated publication
AI tools do not publish content directly. Every text, summary or suggestion produced by AI is reviewed by a human editor before appearing online.
4. Accuracy and fact-checking
AI-generated content may contain errors. For this reason:
- all factual information is checked against reliable sources before publication,
- AI is never used to generate facts, speculate about motives, invent quotes or produce unverifiable details.
5. Transparency on AI-generated images
Florence Daily News may occasionally use AI-generated illustrations when no suitable photograph is available.
When this occurs, we indicate clearly in the caption or alt-text that the image was created with artificial intelligence.
6. Ethical and responsible use
We avoid using generative AI in ways that might:
- mislead readers,
- mimic the identity of real individuals,
- produce synthetic quotes,
- reproduce copyrighted material without permission.
We do not use AI to create fake photos of news events or manipulate documentary images.
7. Data protection
Interactions with AI tools respect privacy and data protection norms. Sensitive personal information, when present in a story, is handled exclusively by human editors.
8. Continuous review
This policy is reviewed periodically to reflect technological developments, professional standards and the evolving regulatory landscape. Updates will be published as needed.
