Tuscany’s coastal rankings are in, and the Maremma region is once again leading the way when it comes to the cleanest and most beautiful seas in the region. The annual “5 Vele” (Five Sails) ranking by Legambiente and Touring Club, one of Italy’s most trusted assessments of seaside quality, has placed several Tuscan destinations among the best in the country.
Maremma at the Top
The province of Grosseto stands out in this year’s list, boasting four entries among the top 22 seaside locations in Italy to receive the prestigious “5 Vele” rating. Leading the group is Castiglione della Pescaia, which ranks sixth nationally. Also highly rated are Capalbio (14th), Giglio Island (16th), and the beaches of Grosseto itself—namely Marina di Grosseto and Principina a Mare—which together secure the 22nd spot.
These destinations are praised not only for the quality of their water but also for environmental preservation, visitor services, and nearby cultural attractions. Castiglione della Pescaia and Grosseto also received the international Blue Flag, while Capalbio and Giglio Island—previously left out of that ranking—earned their redemption in this one.
Versilia Falls Short
In contrast, the traditionally popular Versilia coast performed poorly. Camaiore earned just two sails, while well-known resorts like Viareggio, Forte dei Marmi, and Pietrasanta were assigned only one sail each—the minimum possible in the rankings, which considered over 300 municipalities across Italy.
Strong Showing from Elba and the Etruscan Coast
The Island of Elba also performed well. Campo nell’Elba received four sails, while Rio Marina, Porto Azzurro, Portoferraio, and Marciana each received three. This marks a notable improvement, especially considering that only Marciana had regained a Blue Flag this year.
The Livorno coastline, especially the Etruscan Coast, held its ground with three sails awarded to Castagneto Carducci and San Vincenzo. Cecina and Bibbona had to settle for two, as did Capoliveri on Elba and the Pisa coast resorts of Tirrenia and Marina di Pisa.
Capraia: A Hidden Gem
Capraia Island, an off-the-beaten-path destination in the Tuscan Archipelago, was recognized with four sails. Though harder to reach, it remains a treasured spot for adventurous travelers seeking pristine nature and tranquility.
Tuscany Remains a Top Destination
The “5 Vele” rankings take into account several factors: environmental conservation, tourism infrastructure, water quality, and access to cultural and historical sites. With 22 locations included in the list, Tuscany confirms its status as one of Italy’s most beloved summer destinations.
Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a beach lover, or a culture seeker, the Tuscan coast—especially the Maremma—offers some of the best seaside experiences in the country this summer.
