Wang Yancheng Pays Tribute to Michelangelo

At Galleria dell’Accademia, Wang Yancheng Pays Tribute to Michelangelo

To mark the 550th anniversary of Michelangelo’s birth, the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence is hosting a new exhibition titled Luce, energia, infinito (Light, Energy, Infinity), featuring 18 works by renowned Franco-Chinese artist Wang Yancheng. The exhibition opened on June 23 and will remain on view until September 21, 2025.

Three of the large-scale paintings on display were created specifically for this show. The exhibition, curated by art critic Gabriele Simongini, explores Wang’s distinctive style—a fusion of Eastern and Western influences, merging gestural abstraction with meditative stillness, and material force with spiritual resonance.

Wang’s visual language draws inspiration from traditional Chinese landscape painting as well as European and American abstraction. His work also reflects a deep engagement with contemporary science, including quantum mechanics, and investigates the relationship between humanity and the universe.

In this tribute to Michelangelo, Wang sees the Renaissance master not just as a figure of historical importance but as a guide to transcendence. His art, Wang explains, is not merely representation, but a bridge to higher dimensions—where energy and spirit merge in timeless expression.

For the Galleria dell’Accademia, which houses some of Michelangelo’s most iconic sculptures including the David, the exhibition is a rare contemporary intervention within a space steeped in classical tradition. According to the museum, it offers “a valuable opportunity to engage with the present while fostering a dialogue between past and present, between different artistic visions united by a shared pursuit of the invisible, the essential, and the universal.”

Luce, energia, infinito is open to the public through September 21.
