Pope Francis Dies at 88: Remembering His Profound Bond with Tuscany and Florence

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. His death occurred at 7:35 a.m. in his residence at the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta, following a prolonged battle with double pneumonia and other health complications. The Vatican announced his passing, marking the end of a papacy that began in 2013 and was characterized by humility, advocacy for the marginalized, and efforts to reform the Catholic Church. 

A Profound Connection with Tuscany

Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis cultivated a deep and meaningful relationship with Tuscany, particularly with the city of Florence. His visits to the region underscored his commitment to engaging with diverse communities and addressing contemporary social issues.

November 10, 2015: Prato and Florence

On this date, Pope Francis embarked on a pastoral visit to Prato and Florence. In Prato, he addressed workers, emphasizing the importance of combating corruption and promoting social justice. Later in Florence, he participated in the 5th National Ecclesial Convention and celebrated Mass at the Artemio Franchi Stadium, drawing a congregation of approximately 50,000 faithful. This visit marked the first papal presence in Florence since Pope John Paul II’s visit in 1986. 

May 10, 2018: Nomadelfia and Loppiano

Pope Francis visited Nomadelfia, a community founded by Don Zeno Saltini near Grosseto, known for its commitment to living according to the Gospel and fostering a family-like environment. He then proceeded to Loppiano, the international center of the Focolare Movement near Florence, where he praised the community’s dedication to unity and dialogue among people of different cultures and religions. 

June 20, 2017: Barbiana

In a private visit, Pope Francis traveled to Barbiana to honor the memory of Don Lorenzo Milani, a priest renowned for his educational work and advocacy for social equality. The Pope’s homage highlighted his appreciation for individuals who dedicate their lives to serving marginalized communities.

Scheduled Visit in February 2022

Pope Francis had planned to return to Florence in February 2022 to participate in the “Mediterranean, Frontier of Peace” meeting, aiming to engage with bishops and mayors from the region. However, due to health issues, he was unable to attend the event.

March 4, 2024: Meeting with Tuscan Bishops

Demonstrating his ongoing commitment to the region, Pope Francis received bishops from Tuscany at the Vatican for their “ad limina” visit. During this meeting, they discussed various aspects of pastoral care and the challenges facing the Church in Tuscany.
