The enchanting city of Florence is once again illuminating its historic streets and piazzas for the holiday season. Until January 7th, 2025, Florence Lights Up will transform the city into a magical winter wonderland.
This year’s light festival, organized by the Municipality of Florence and Fondazione MUS.E, in collaboration with the Metropolitan City of Florence and supported by the Ministry of Tourism, promises to be more spectacular than ever. The initiative is a spin-off of the city’s traditional Christmas celebrations, with a special focus on light installations and video mapping.
A Symphony of Lights
One of the highlights of the festival is the return of video mapping on the iconic Ponte Vecchio. Visitors will be mesmerized by the colorful projections that will transform the bridge into a living canvas. The video art is inspired by the Enjoy Respect Florence campaign, encouraging visitors to appreciate the city’s beauty while respecting its heritage.
Other notable locations for light projections include Palazzo Vecchio and the church of San Paolino. The Piazza Santa Maria Novella will also be illuminated, with a special focus on the facade of the Chamber of Commerce. The Medici Garden at Palazzo Medici Riccardi will feature a luminous orange tree, statues, and a lemon house, along with a stunning Christmas tree.
Beyond the Historic Center
The festivities extend beyond the historic center, with the city’s four neighborhoods joining in on the fun. Quartiere 2will be illuminated in Piazza delle Cure, while Quartiere 3 will feature a 10-meter Christmas tree in Piazza Acciaiuoli. Piazza dell’Isolotto in Quartiere 4 will also be adorned with lights, and Quartiere 5 will feature a star in Piazza Dalmazia and illuminated areas in the Parco di San Donato.
Additional Festive Events
In addition to the light installations, Florence will host a variety of festive events. The Museo Novecento will present Flowering of light, a large video installation by artists Angela Detanico and Rafael Lain in the Sala d’Arme at Palazzo Vecchio. The project, supported by Gucci, is a must-see for art lovers.
A Sustainable Celebration
Florence Lights Up is not only a visually stunning event but also a sustainable one. The city has taken steps to minimize the environmental impact of the festival, using energy-efficient lighting and promoting eco-friendly practices.
