A remarkable heart donation procedure has been successfully carried out at the Careggi University Hospital in Florence, one of Italy’s leading centers for organ donation. The procedure, performed in recent weeks, involved the retrieval of a heart from a donor after circulatory death (DCD), marking a milestone in advanced organ transplantation. The recipient of the heart is currently in good health, as are those who received other organs retrieved during the same procedure, including a liver and kidneys.
From Grief to Hope
“This generous act by the young donor and their family offers a tangible chance at life, turning profound grief into hope,” said Eugenio Giani, President of Tuscany. He also emphasized the pride Tuscany takes in its established culture of organ donation. Simone Bezzini, Regional Health Councilor, added, “Donating an organ is an altruistic act of immense significance. Our first thoughts are with the donor and their family.” Bezzini highlighted the importance of this type of donation, attributing its success to the expertise of professionals and the seamless integration of Tuscany’s procurement and transplant network with the national system.
Collaborative Expertise in Action
The procedure was executed with the collaboration of the Heart Transplant Center in Padua, which has a longstanding partnership with the Heart Transplant Center in Siena. Notably, a similar donation and transplantation were successfully performed in August, enabling heart, liver, and kidney transplants. The recent procedure at Careggi underscored the technical and organizational complexity of DCD donations, requiring the coordinated efforts of regional and national transplant teams.
“This accomplishment showcases the excellence of our healthcare system,” Bezzini stated. “Thanks to the dedication of our professionals, such complex processes are now achievable in multiple centers across our region.” Both the President and Health Councilor extended gratitude to all the institutions and teams involved, including the National Transplant Center, led by Dr. Giuseppe Feltrin, and various regional transplant centers and medical units.
A Leader in Organ Donation
Careggi Hospital has solidified its reputation as a national leader in controlled DCD donations, particularly among patients with irreversible cardiac arrest. These donations require intricate clinical and logistical coordination. Since May 2023, heart retrieval using this advanced technique has been permissible in Italy, with Tuscany’s first case occurring in August. To date, over 30 heart transplants from DCD donors have been successfully performed nationwide in 2024, showcasing the growing impact of this innovative approach.
This landmark achievement underscores Tuscany’s commitment to advancing organ donation and transplantation, providing hope and new life to countless patients while setting a benchmark for medical excellence.
