FLORENCE, ITALY – Florence cultural authorities on Friday moved to repair Pio Fedi’s Rape of Polyxena in the Loggia dei Lanzi in the central Piazza della Signoria following the removal of a finger in the latest act of vandalism against the statue.

Alberto Casciani was called in to repair the statue after an English-speaking female tourist broke off the left index finger before being stopped by local municipal police. The same restorer was summoned to reattach the same finger following a similar episode of vandalism in October 2012.

”All the fingers of the left hand are integrations, made necessary by repeated removals and acts of vandalism,” the Florence cultural authorities said in a statement. The 1865 statue depicting Achilles and Hector’s sister during the Trojan War is sometimes confused with the nearby Rape of the Sabine Women (1579-1583), considered Renaissance sculptor Giambologna’s masterpiece.
