FLORENCE, ITALY – Fiorentina has hired Vincenzo Montella as coach on a two-year contract to replace Delio Rossi, who was fired last month for hitting midfielder Adem Ljajic during a Serie A match.
The deal contains the option of another year and was signed on Monday by Montella, who was released last week from his contract with Catania.
Montella took over at Catania last year after a brief spell as caretaker-coach at Roma. He led the Sicilian club to an 11th-place finish. The tactician signed a two-year contract with the Viola today and he’s keen for the club’s best player to remain.
“Jovetic is an incredible player, of the highest level, and I hope I will be able to Coach him,” he said at his unveiling. “I’ll speak to everyone though, as I need to see if certain players are motivated and ready to stay.”
“I don’t think a winning tactical model exists, otherwise everyone would use it,” he added. “I believe in a method and a certain type of how to approach games.
“Jovetic could adapt to a 4-3-3, but he wouldn’t express himself to his best. Playing alongside a striker, however, would see him give a lot more.”
