FLORENCE, ITALY – The Florence native and former European Central Bank Executive Board member Lorenzo Bini Smaghi paid 50 euros to fund Florence Mayor Matteo Renzi’s campaign for the leadership of Italy’s Democratic Party. Matteo Renzi aims to become the premier candidate in the general election of April.
The contribution of Bini Smaghi and others lenders is included in a list posted on the official website of Renzi’s campaign. The list also included 100 euros paid by Gaddo della Gherardesca, former partner of the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson.
The total amount raised is 56,850 euros (updated October, 6, 2012) . Renzi is raising funds to pay for the campaign along 108 Italian provinces with two RV (Recreation Vehicle) and a 15-people staff.
Renzi has never said how much planned spending for the campaign. His main opponents are the secretary of the Democratic Party Pierluigi Bersani and the leader of Sel Nichi Vendola.
