Women will be able to visit many of Florence’s main museums free of charge on Sunday, 8 March, as the city marks International Women’s Day with a wide range of cultural initiatives.
The free entry applies to several major institutions, including museums run by the Italian Ministry of Culture as well as Florence’s civic museums. Many sites will also host special events and guided tours highlighting female figures in history, art and society.
Free entry at Uffizi Galleries and Accademia
Women will have free admission on 8 March to all museums that are part of the Uffizi Galleries, the state museum complex that includes the Uffizi Gallery, Pitti Palace, and the Boboli Gardens.
The initiative follows a directive from Italy’s Ministry of Culture and applies to all women visiting the museums that belong to the Uffizi system. The only exception is the temporary exhibition Once Upon a Time: The Medici and the Art of Wax Modelling, which is not included in the free entry scheme.
Other major state museums in Florence will also participate in the initiative. Free admission for women will be available at the Accademia Gallery, home to Michelangelo’s David, as well as at the Museum of Palazzo Davanzati, the Medici Chapels Museum, and the Orsanmichele Museum Complex.
Civic museums and Palazzo Medici Riccardi
Florence’s civic museums will also join the initiative, offering free entry to all female visitors on the same day. The programme includes sites such as the Palazzo Vecchio Museum, one of the city’s most important historic buildings, as well as Palazzo Medici Riccardi, the Renaissance palace that once housed the Medici family.
The civic museum network is organising several themed activities dedicated to women’s history, coordinated by Fondazione MUS.E, the organisation that manages many of the city’s museums and cultural programmes.
At Palazzo Vecchio, a special visit titled Under the Wings of a Peahen will explore the life and influence of Eleonora of Toledo, the Spanish noblewoman who became duchess of Florence and played a central role in the Medici court during the 16th century. The event will run from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
Music and women’s stories at the Murate
The Murate Art District, located in the former convent and prison complex in the Santa Croce area, will host several events connected to the day.
As part of the Museums in Music programme, the orchestra La Filharmonie will perform a concert dedicated to women. Another event, scheduled from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., will guide visitors through the history of the Murate complex through the writings of Sister Giustina Niccolini, a nun who documented life in the convent in 1598.
Other museums in Florence and Tuscany
Several other museums and cultural sites in Florence and across Tuscany will also offer free entry to women.
In Florence, participating locations include the Museum of San Marco, known for its frescoes by Fra Angelico, and the Cenacolo di Andrea del Sarto at San Salvi.
Outside the city centre, free entry will also be available at Medici villas such as Villa Medicea della Petraia, the Garden of the Medici Villa of Castello, Villa Il Ventaglio park, and the Medici Villa of Cerreto Guidi, where themed guided tours will focus on the women of the Medici family.
Across Tuscany, additional events are planned at archaeological sites and museums in cities including Arezzo, Lucca, Pisa and Chiusi, with exhibitions, guided tours and talks exploring women’s roles in history and archaeology.
Practical information
Free admission on 8 March applies only to women and only at participating museums and cultural sites. Opening hours and booking requirements may vary depending on the venue.
Visitors are advised to check the official websites of individual museums before their visit for updated information on schedules and access.
