High-speed train passengers travelling to and from Florence will face changes over the weekend of Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 January 2026, due to construction works connected to the replacement of Ponte al Pino, a railway bridge on the eastern side of the city. The intervention is being carried out by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, Italy’s rail infrastructure manager.
Suspension between Rifredi and Campo di Marte
Rail traffic through the Florence node will be fully suspended between Firenze Rifredi and Firenze Campo di Martefrom 3 p.m. on Saturday 24 January until 3 p.m. on Sunday 25 January.
As a result, high-speed trains (Alta Velocità) will not call at Santa Maria Novella, Florence’s main station, during the interruption.
Reduced AV service and alternative connections
During the shutdown, one high-speed train per hour will operate in each direction to and from Florence. Trains arriving from northern Italy will terminate at Firenze Rifredi, while those from the south will stop at Firenze Campo di Marte.
To maintain connectivity within the city, replacement buses will link Rifredi and Campo di Marte with Santa Maria Novella. Passengers should allow extra travel time and check platform and bus stop information in advance.
Changes also outside the main interruption
Railway authorities warn that service adjustments may also affect the morning of Saturday 24 January and the afternoon of Sunday 25 January, outside the core 24-hour suspension, due to timetable reprogramming for both long-distance and regional trains.
Passengers are advised to consult their train operator’s website or customer service channels before travelling, especially those with bookings involving Florence as a stopover rather than a final destination.
Road traffic will also be affected
Road traffic will also be affected in the eastern part of Florence in mid-January. Overnight works between 12 and 13 January will lead to temporary closures and traffic bans on Ponte al Pino, with detours in place and alternative routes via the Cure and Piazza Alberti overpasses. Further partial restrictions are planned from 13 to 17 January to allow utility works, with lane reductions and closures at nearby junctions.
