Florence names riverside square after Gucci founder Guccio Gucci

Florence has officially named a small public square after Guccio Gucci, the founder of the luxury fashion house that originated in the city, in a ceremony held on 26 March.

The newly designated piazzetta Guccio Gucci is located along the Arno river, with access from Lungarno Torrigiani and Via dei Bardi, close to Ponte Vecchio and facing the Uffizi complex on the opposite bank. The site offers one of the most recognisable views of Florence’s historic centre.

The inauguration was led by Caterina Biti, Florence’s councillor responsible for place naming, and attended by Patrizia Gucci, great-granddaughter of the entrepreneur. Guccio Gucci was born in 1881 and died in 1953, founding what would become one of Italy’s best-known global fashion brands, now owned by the French group Kering.

According to the municipality, the dedication recognises Gucci’s contribution to Florence’s international identity. City officials highlighted how his work helped promote Italian craftsmanship, design and manufacturing quality worldwide, linking the brand closely to the cultural image of Florence.

The official resolution described Gucci as an entrepreneur who transformed a small leather goods workshop into a globally recognised name in the fashion industry, underlining the long-standing connection between the city and its tradition of high-quality artisanal production.

The naming of the square is part of Florence’s broader toponymy programme, which assigns public spaces to figures considered significant in the city’s history, culture and economic development.
