FLORENCE, ITALY – Democratic Party wins constellation of regional, local polls in Italy. Those included the vote to find a new Florence mayor to replace Matteo Renzi, who resigned the post in February to become the Italian premier.
In Florence, Dario Nardella looked set to win as mayor with the Democratic Party receiving some 60% of the vote in the traditionally left-wing Tuscan capital. Candidates from Premier Matteo Renzi’s Democratic Party (PD) claimed victory Monday in regional elections in Piedmont too.
That saw Renzi’s party win more than 40% of Italian votes for the EU Parliament, trouncing the 5-Star Movement (M5S) led by comic Beppe Grillo and former premier Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party.
