FLORENCE, ITALY – With the top lap times in the first three practices, and a new circuit record, it seemed certain that Jorge Lorenzo would capture the pole for Round 9 of the 2012 MotoGP World Championship at the Mugello Circuit near Florence, Italy. But, with time for only one more lap remaining, and another record-setting pace, Lorenzo sat up and rode into the pits.
With perfect weather conditions, the top ten riders all set lap times within a second of the 1’47.284 pole position pace of Dani Pedrosa.
In the press conference that followed qualifying, Lorenzo explained that something went wrong with the electronics for the bike, cutting fueling to the engine in the last turn of his final qualifying lap.
