First Snow of the Season Falls in Abetone and Val di Luce in Tuscany

The first snowfall of the season arrived in Abetone and Val di Luce on Sunday, 1 November 2026, as a sharp drop in temperatures brought wintry conditions to the mountains of northern Tuscany.

Snow began falling early in the morning in Abetone, a mountain resort in the province of Pistoia, approximately 80 kilometres north-west of Florence. The snowfall was also recorded in nearby Val di Luce, one of the area’s main skiing destinations.

Webcams overlooking Piazza Europa, the central square in Abetone, showed snowflakes falling during the early hours. However, the snow had not accumulated sufficiently to form a continuous covering on the square or the surrounding slopes.

Conditions were different in Val di Luce, where more persistent snowfall left a thin layer of snow around the ski lift facilities and on parts of the surrounding mountain landscape.

The early snowfall follows a sudden fall in temperatures at higher altitudes, although it remains too soon to determine whether the conditions will continue in the coming days.

Abetone and Val di Luce are among Tuscany’s principal winter sports destinations, attracting skiers and other visitors from Florence and across central Italy during the colder months.

Despite the first signs of winter, there is currently no indication that the snowfall will lead to an early opening of the ski lifts. Further snowfall and sustained low temperatures would be needed before the ski season could begin.

For local tourism businesses, the arrival of snow marks an early reminder of the approaching winter season, although its impact will depend on weather conditions over the coming weeks.

Evening updates

Snowfall was also reported in the Metropolitan City of Florence, particularly in the Apennines above 1,200 metres. According to the Metropolitan City’s Civil Protection Service, the first snowflakes began covering mountain passes, with a few centimetres accumulating at Passo della Consuma, especially along the SR 70 regional road. Authorities urged motorists to exercise particular caution due to the sudden drop in temperatures and changing road conditions.
