Uffizi, Accademia and other Florence museums free on Sunday

Florence’s state museums will open their doors for free on Sunday, 6 September 2026, as Domenica al Museo returns for its monthly appointment across Italy.

The initiative, organised by Italy’s Ministry of Culture on the first Sunday of every month, gives visitors free admission to participating state-run museums, archaeological sites, historic villas, gardens and other cultural sites. Museums will generally follow their normal Sunday opening hours.

In Florence, some of the city’s most visited museums are taking part, including the Uffizi Gallery and the Galleria dell’Accademia, home to Michelangelo’s David. Free admission will also be available at Pitti Palace, the Boboli Gardens, the Bargello National Museum and the Medici Chapels.

Other participating sites in Florence include the Church and Museum of Orsanmichele, Palazzo Davanzati, the National Archaeological Museum, the San Marco Museum, the Cenacolo di Sant’Apollonia, the Cenacolo di Andrea del Sarto at San Salvi, the Medici Villa of La Petraia and the garden of the Medici Villa of Castello.

The Vasari Corridor, the elevated passage connecting the Uffizi area with Pitti Palace across the Arno, is also included in the initiative. Unlike most of the other participating Florence museums, however, access to the corridor requires advance booking.

Booking and queues

Visitors should expect the main museums to be particularly busy during the free-entry day.

At the Galleria dell’Accademia, Bargello, Medici Chapels, Orsanmichele and Palazzo Davanzati, advance reservations will not be available for Domenica al Museo, according to the Galleria dell’Accademia and Musei del Bargello museum system. Visitors will therefore enter according to the arrangements in place on the day.

The Ministry of Culture recommends checking individual museum websites or the official Musei Italiani app before travelling, as opening hours and access arrangements can vary between sites.

Free museums across Tuscany

The initiative is not limited to Florence. State museums and archaeological sites elsewhere in Tuscany will also participate, including locations in Arezzo, Siena, Pisa, Lucca, Grosseto, Livorno, Prato and other parts of the region.

Domenica al Museo takes place on the first Sunday of every month and is open to both Italian and international visitors.
