Autumn Festival Brings 226 Events Across Florence

Florence is taking its autumn cultural programme beyond the city’s UNESCO-listed historic centre, with more than 226 events scheduled across its neighbourhoods from 1 October to 30 November 2026.

The fifth edition of Autunno Fiorentino includes concerts, theatre, contemporary dance, circus and workshops, with many events free of charge. The programme is spread across Florence’s five administrative districts and includes several projects likely to be of particular interest to an international audience.

Among them is WAX, a work by Chinese choreographer Er Gao exploring the history and circulation of wax fabric and its connections with migration, cultural exchange and the transmission of knowledge.

The project forms part of Oltre le Mura | Beyond the Walls, organised by contemporary arts foundation Fabbrica Europa from 15 October to 15 November. Activities will take place at several locations outside the main tourist centre, including PARC and Manifattura Tabacchi, the former tobacco factory that has been redeveloped as a cultural and commercial complex.

The programme also includes Senegalese griot Badara Seck, alongside Amine Ezzalzouli and Susannah Iheme, as well as a site-specific contemporary circus performance by Quattrox4 Circo at Florence’s former Pignone gasometer.

International musicians in Florence

Several internationally known musicians are included in Musica da Abitare, a programme organised by Music Pool between 13 October and 28 November.

French accordionist Vincent Peirani and American singer-songwriter Micah P. Hinson are due to perform at Brillante Nuovo Teatro Lippi, a theatre in the Rifredi area of northern Florence.

Spanish drummer Jorge Rossy, known for his long association with the international jazz scene, will meanwhile take part in an artistic residency at Exfila, another cultural venue away from the historic centre.

Classical music will also move outside Florence’s traditional concert halls. The Orchestra della Toscana’s Musica Diffusaseries includes nine free events around the city, with programmes ranging from Vivaldi and Beethoven to Stravinsky, Richard Strauss and Ravel’s Boléro.

Admission to the concerts is free but advance booking is required online. Audiences can also make voluntary donations supporting meals provided by Caritas Firenze.

Remembering the 1966 Florence flood

This year’s programme coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Florence flood of 4 November 1966, one of the defining events in the city’s modern history.

Floodwaters from the Arno devastated Florence, damaging homes, businesses, churches, libraries and works of art. The disaster also prompted an international effort to rescue the city’s cultural heritage, with young volunteers who travelled to Florence from around the world becoming known as the “Mud Angels”.

The anniversary is reflected in several Autunno Fiorentino events.

From 23 to 27 November, Santa Catastrofe, produced by Elsinor, will combine theatre, music and performance, drawing on works by Antonin Artaud, Dino Buzzati and Friedrich Dürrenmatt. Events will be held in neighbourhood libraries and at Teatro Cantiere Florida.

The Visioni programme organised by Teatro Puccini will also address the relationship between people, water and the landscape with a performance at Parco dell’Anconella, a large riverside park in southern Florence.

From headphone theatre to contemporary circus

Other projects offer visitors a chance to discover parts of Florence rarely included in conventional cultural itineraries.

Teatri Mobili nelle periferie di Firenze will stage 22 itinerant and headphone-based theatre events between 16 October and 29 November. Locations range from the Cascine park and the Arcetri Astrophysical Observatory area to Villa Galileo, Museo Stibbert and Villa Il Ventaglio.

Contemporary circus is another major part of the programme. Vento Multiforme, organised by Aria Network Culturale, will present 32 events, while Komorebi will bring dance, theatre, music, cinema and workshops into markets, squares, schools, sports facilities and other everyday spaces across the city.

The broader programme also marks the centenary of the birth of Italian playwright and Nobel laureate Dario Fo, as well as the tenth anniversary of Florence-based music organisation Filharmonie.

Autunno Fiorentino is organised by the City of Florence and financed with €591,705 from Italy’s Ministry of Culture through the national fund supporting live performance.

The full programme runs from 1 October to 30 November 2026, with individual events taking place at venues across Florence outside the UNESCO historic centre. Admission conditions vary, although a large part of the programme is free.
