Major museums in Florence to stay open on Ferragosto 2026

Many of Florence’s main state museums and cultural sites will remain open on Saturday, 15 August 2026, when Italy marks Ferragosto, one of the country’s main summer public holidays.

Italy’s Ministry of Culture said state museums, archaeological parks and other cultural sites, including monuments, villas and historic gardens, will open according to the schedules and access arrangements set by each institution. Where reservations are normally required, those rules will continue to apply.

Visitors should note that 15 August is not a free museum day. Normal admission charges and existing concessions will remain in force.

Uffizi, Palazzo Pitti and Boboli Gardens

The Uffizi Gallery will be open on both Saturday, 15 August and Sunday, 16 August from 8.15 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., with last admission at 5.30 p.m., according to information published by the Ministry of Culture.

The Ferragosto openings also include the main museums and spaces belonging to the Uffizi Galleries complex. The Ministry’s programme lists Palazzo Pitti, including the Palatine Gallery and Royal Apartments, Gallery of Modern Art, Palatine Chapel and Museum of Costume and Fashion, as open on 15 August.

The Museum of Costume and Fashion, for example, is scheduled to open from 8.15 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., with last admission at 5.30 p.m.

The Boboli Gardens are also included among the Ferragosto openings.

The Vasari Corridor, the elevated passage linking the Uffizi with the Pitti Palace area via Ponte Vecchio, is also scheduled to be accessible. Visits to the corridor require advance booking, including for visitors who would otherwise qualify for free admission. Under its normal timetable, the first group enters at 10.15 a.m. and the final daytime slot is at 4.35 p.m.; visitors must enter the Uffizi two hours before their scheduled corridor visit.

Accademia, Bargello and Orsanmichele

Other state museums in central Florence listed for Ferragosto include the Galleria dell’Accademia (hosts the Michelangelo David), Bargello National Museum, housed in the medieval Palazzo del Bargello, as well as the Medici Chapels, the burial complex of the Medici family next to the Basilica of San Lorenzo.

The Church and Museum of Orsanmichele, between Piazza della Signoria and the Duomo, is also among the sites due to open on 15 August.

The Ministry’s Ferragosto programme also lists Palazzo Davanzati, the museum dedicated to domestic life in a historic Florentine residence.

Opening times and admission arrangements can vary between museums, so visitors should check the individual museum’s information before travelling, particularly where timed entry or reservations are available.

What Ferragosto means in Italy

Ferragosto, celebrated every year on 15 August, coincides with the Catholic Feast of the Assumption and is one of Italy’s major summer holidays. Many businesses and services traditionally close or reduce their hours, particularly in cities, while tourist attractions may operate special schedules.

For 2026, however, visitors in Florence will have access to many of the city’s principal state museums throughout the holiday.
