Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Unveils 2027 Season and 89th Festival Edition

The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino has presented its 2027 season and the 89th edition of the Maggio Festival, unveiling a programme that includes 12 opera titles, seven new productions, a new ballet, 20 symphonic and choral concerts, recitals and educational events aimed at younger audiences.

Announced in Florence on 19 June, the season is designed as a journey through the history of European music, from the Baroque era to the twentieth century. The programme combines established repertoire with new productions and international collaborations, continuing the theatre’s focus on both tradition and contemporary interpretation.

The season’s central artistic figure will be Music Director Daniele Gatti, who is scheduled to conduct three new opera productions and six symphonic concerts. Gatti will also launch a two-year cycle dedicated to the complete symphonies of Austrian composer Anton Bruckner.

Opera programme

The 2027 season features 12 opera titles, including two presented in concert form.

The programme opens with Verdi’s La traviata, conducted by Alessandro Bonato and directed by Stefania Grazioli. Other productions include Baldassarre Galuppi’s Il mondo alla roversa, ossia le donne che comandano, Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, Richard Strauss’s Elektra, Bellini’s Norma, Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur, Donizetti’s Anna Bolena and Mozart’s Don Giovanni.

Several productions will receive new stagings, including Il trovatoreA Midsummer Night’s DreamTristan und IsoldeElektraAnna Bolena and Don Giovanni.

The season also includes concert performances of Verdi’s Macbeth and Puccini’s Tosca.

A new Swan Lake production

The ballet offering for 2027 will be a new production of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, choreographed by Xander Parish and conducted by James Conlon. The production is being created in collaboration with The New Generation Foundation.

International stars and major conductors

Alongside the resident Orchestra and Chorus of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the season will feature guest ensembles including the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester and the Orchestra della Toscana.

Conductors scheduled to appear include Daniele Gatti, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, James Conlon, Kirill Petrenko, Philippe Jordan, Ivor Bolton and Alexander Soddy.

Among the soloists announced are pianists Martha Argerich, Beatrice Rana, Yunchan Lim, Grigory Sokolov and Mao Fujita, together with violinist Maxim Vengerov and cellist Ettore Pagano.

The vocal programme will feature leading international opera singers including Jonas Kaufmann, Marina Rebeka, Pretty Yende, Ludovic Tézier, Kristina Mkhitaryan, Aigul Akhmetshina and Elīna Garanča.

Concerts and anniversaries

The symphonic season will include 20 orchestral concerts, four solo recitals and three vocal concerts. Repertoire will range from Handel, Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven to Brahms, Bruckner, Strauss, Stravinsky, Prokofiev and Shostakovich.

The programme will also mark several anniversaries, including celebrations linked to Beethoven and the centenary of the birth of legendary cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich. The theatre will also formally honour its founder Vittorio Gui through an official dedication initiative.

Events for families and schools

Educational and family programming remains a significant part of the theatre’s activities.

The year will begin on 3 January with Disney’s Fantasia accompanied live by the Maggio Orchestra. The theatre will also continue its collaboration with Venti Lucenti, offering productions involving students and young musicians, as well as the fourth edition of the outreach programme C’è Musica e Musica 4.0, which introduces younger audiences to opera and classical music.

The educational calendar will conclude with the traditional Christmas Concert by the children’s choir of the Accademia del Maggio.

Subscription packages and ticket sales

The theatre is offering four subscription options for the 2027 season, ranging from a full-package “Tutto Maggio” subscription covering opera, ballet and concerts to dedicated opera and symphonic packages.

Subscription renewals and new subscriptions are available (started on 19 June 2026).

Tickets for individual performances will go on sale on 10 July 2026.

The theatre said ticket prices will remain unchanged from the previous season.
