Around 2,500 cyclists are expected to participate in the 10th edition of Eroica Montalcino, scheduled for Sunday, 31 May, on the historic white roads of the Val d’Orcia area in southern Tuscany.
The event, organised by Eroica Italia, has become one of the best-known vintage cycling gatherings in Italy, combining amateur sport with the landscape and rural heritage of the UNESCO-listed countryside around Montalcino, a hill town about 40 kilometres south of Siena.
Organisers said international participation continues to grow, with foreign riders accounting for nearly 30% of registrations this year. Germany represents the largest international group, followed by Switzerland, Austria, the United Kingdom and the United States. Participants will also arrive from countries including Australia, Japan, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.
Italian riders are expected from all regions of the country, with Tuscany and Lombardy making up the largest share of registrations.
The programme will begin on Friday, 29 May, in Piazza del Popolo in central Montalcino and continue throughout the weekend with events and activities linked to cycling culture and local food traditions.
The main ride on Sunday will offer five different routes across the Val d’Orcia and the Crete Senesi area, ranging from longer and more demanding itineraries to shorter routes designed for participants looking for a slower pace, with stops in villages and countryside refreshment points along the way.
Eroica events are known for their focus on vintage bicycles and traditional cycling attire, recreating the atmosphere of classic road races that once crossed Tuscany’s gravel roads before modern asphalt routes became widespread.
