Florence has introduced up to 60 temporary taxi licences to strengthen the city’s transport service during the peak tourist months, with the measure running from 25 April to 1 November 2026.
The initiative, approved by the City of Florence (Comune di Firenze), is designed to respond to the steady increase in visitors and overall demand for taxis between spring and autumn. The additional permits, known locally as “licenze ter”, are assigned to existing taxi cooperatives to expand the number of active shifts across the day.
More cars and longer coverage
The temporary licences allow taxis to operate an ordinary shift from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., with the possibility for the municipality to adjust schedules depending on service needs.
They add to the city’s 724 standard taxi licences and to existing measures that already extend service capacity, such as the option for drivers to activate a second driver per licence, effectively doubling operating hours.
Together, these tools are intended to increase the number of vehicles available on the streets at the busiest times, particularly in areas with high tourist flows.
Focus on stations and airport
According to the city’s councillor for economic development and tourism, Jacopo Vicini, the strengthened service is part of a broader effort coordinated with taxi unions and cooperatives.
Among the additional measures already introduced is the presence of stewards at Santa Maria Novella railway station, Florence’s main train hub. These staff members, organised and funded by taxi cooperatives, help manage queues and direct passengers.
The city administration is now considering extending this system to other high-demand locations, including Florence Airport.
Managing seasonal pressure
Florence, a city of about 380,000 residents that receives millions of visitors each year, faces recurring pressure on its transport network during the high season.
By increasing the number of available taxis and shifts, the municipality aims to reduce waiting times and improve accessibility for both residents and visitors, particularly during weekends, holidays and major events.
