Florence has awarded the Keys of the City to Vitaliy Klitschko, mayor of Kyiv, during an official ceremony held on 20 March at Palazzo Vecchio. The keys were presented by Florence mayor Sara Funaro in the Sala degli Elementi.
The recognition, one of the highest civic honours granted by the city, symbolises friendship, solidarity and openness. It is traditionally given to figures considered to embody values that Florence seeks to promote.
A gesture of solidarity and political meaning
According to the city administration, the award is intended both as a symbolic act and as a concrete expression of support for Ukraine. Funaro said the gesture aims to reaffirm the bond between Florence and Kyiv while also sending a clear message calling for peace and expressing closeness to the Ukrainian population.
The initiative comes in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine, with Florence continuing to position itself among European cities that have supported Kyiv through humanitarian assistance and public initiatives since the start of the conflict in 2022.
A relationship rooted in history
The link between Florence and Kyiv dates back several decades. In 1966, after the devastating flood that hit Florence, Kyiv provided financial support to help the city recover. The following year, in 1967, a formal twinning agreement was signed under then-mayor Piero Bargellini, during the Cold War.
The two cities are set to mark the 60th anniversary of that agreement in 2027. Over time, the partnership has included cultural exchanges and institutional cooperation, and has taken on renewed significance since the outbreak of the war.
Recognition of leadership during wartime
In its official motivation, the City of Florence described Klitschko as an example of leadership and responsibility during a period of exceptional difficulty. The text highlights his role in guiding Kyiv through the challenges of war, emphasising values such as resilience, commitment and the defence of democratic principles.
The honour also explicitly recalls the historical solidarity shown by Kyiv to Florence in 1966, framing the current gesture as part of a reciprocal relationship that has endured across generations.
A message beyond the ceremony
The awarding of the Keys of the City is meant to underline that the relationship between Florence and Kyiv goes beyond formal diplomacy. City officials described it as a sign that the two communities intend to continue working together and maintaining ties despite the current geopolitical situation.
The keys, traditionally associated with the idea of opening the city’s gates, were presented as a symbol of welcome and a hope for a future in which exchanges between Florence and Kyiv can fully resume under peaceful conditions.
