Voices festival on media freedom returns to Florence

The European journalism festival Voices will return to Florence from 10 to 12 March for its third edition, bringing together journalists, researchers and media professionals to discuss the challenges facing the news industry today.

The event will take place at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, a major cultural venue near Florence’s Cascine park, and will focus on topics such as press freedom, the future of journalism, the safety of reporters, media pluralism and the growing role of artificial intelligence in editorial work.

The festival is organised by a consortium of European organisations working on media freedom and pluralism. The lead partner is the Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom at the European University Institute (EUI), based in Fiesole, just outside Florence. Other partners include the European Federation of Journalists, the European Centre for Press and Media FreedomEBU-UER (European Broadcasting Union), the European Association for Viewers’ InterestsLie DetectorsSavoir Devenir, and Deutsche Welle. The initiative is co-funded by the European Union.

Over three days, speakers will take part in debates, panel discussions and public conversations examining the state of journalism in Europe and beyond.

Among the international guests expected at the festival are Melissa Chan, an international affairs journalist and documentary filmmaker; Matthew Caruana Galizia, a journalist known for his investigations into corruption and financial crime; Flutura Kusari, a legal expert working on press freedom and journalists’ rights; and Renate Schroeder, director of the European Federation of Journalists.

Other participants include journalists, researchers and media professionals from different countries, reflecting the festival’s aim to create a European forum on the future of information and the protection of press freedom.

According to the organisers, the initiative is intended to promote dialogue on how journalism can adapt to technological change while maintaining independence, credibility and pluralism.

The festival will run 10–12 March 2026 at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence. Free admission; registration recommended to attend the events. The full programme and registration details are available on the official website Voicesfestival.
