Giardino delle Rose in Florence to undergo upgrades and path repairs

The Giardino delle Rose, one of Florence’s most visited public gardens, is undergoing a series of maintenance and safety works aimed at improving paths, viewpoints and the Japanese garden area.

The garden, located below Piazzale Michelangelo on the southern side of the historic centre, offers open views over the city and hosts a large collection of rose varieties, attracting both residents and tourists, especially in spring and early summer.

Panoramic parapet restored

The Municipality of Florence has completed the full refurbishment of the panoramic parapet overlooking the city. The intervention was considered necessary due to wear over time and included consolidation works on the supporting wall.

City officials said the work was part of a broader effort to ensure safety and improve the condition of public spaces that are heavily used by residents and visitors.

Around 400 metres of paths to be repaired

The next phase of the project will focus on internal walkways. About 400 metres of pedestrian paths are scheduled for restoration, with particular attention to sections along Via San Salvatore a Monte and Via del Monte alle Croci, two roads bordering the garden that had shown visible signs of deterioration.

The works are intended to improve accessibility and safety, especially during periods of high foot traffic.

Maintenance for the Japanese pagoda

The plan also includes maintenance of the wooden pagoda in the Japanese garden area, a structure symbolising Florence’s twinning agreement with Kyoto.

The intervention will involve replacing damaged wooden boards and repainting the structure in its original colour. The pagoda has required maintenance for some time and is considered one of the garden’s distinctive features.

According to the deputy mayor, the overall allocation for the interventions amounts to €75,000. City officials described the works as part of ongoing small-scale maintenance efforts aimed at preserving the city’s landscape heritage and ensuring that public green spaces remain safe and usable.

Practical information

The Giardino delle Rose remains open during the works, although temporary restrictions or limited access to certain areas may occur while construction is underway. Visitors are advised to check the Municipality of Florence’s official website for updates before planning a visit.
