Extra concert announced at Florence’s Maggio, conducted by Zubin Mehta

The Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino has announced an extra, off-schedule concert on January 21, 2026, to be performed by the Orchestra of the Maggio and conducted by Zubin Mehta.

The date had originally been reserved for one of two performances of the ballet Pas de deux for toes and fingers, featuring étoile Svetlana Zakharova together with violinist and conductor Vadim Repin. Both ballet performances, scheduled for 20 and 21 January, were later suspended amid international tensions involving Russia, prompting the theatre to reorganise the programme.

The newly announced concert will include Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 3 in D major, D200, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5.

Upcoming changes and future dates

Mehta is also scheduled to return to the Maggio on February 6, 2026 for a concert with an all-Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart programme. That concert will later be performed on tour in Lugano, at the LAC, on February 7, and in Lucca, at the Teatro del Giglio, on February 10.

Other programme changes have also been confirmed. The April 3 concert, originally planned under Mehta with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, will now be conducted by Vasily Petrenko, leading the Orchestra and Chorus of the Maggio. The April 23 performance of Gustav Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde will instead be conducted by Thomas Guggeis.

Mehta is expected back on the podium on April 29, the day of his 90th birthday, to conduct Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Orchestra and Chorus of the Maggio.
