The small tabernacle on Piazza Tasso has regained its original colours after a restoration promoted by the cultural association Friends of Florence and the volunteer network Angeli del Bello, in collaboration with the City of Florence.
The 18th-century shrine, which features fresco fragments depicting the Madonna and Child with Saints, had long been darkened by pollution and biological deposits. The recent cleaning removed these layers and revealed the original decorative details and painted surfaces.
The intervention, financed by Friends of Florence and carried out within the city’s Restauro diffuso programme, was conducted by conservators Michela Vannini and Matteo Stefani, under the supervision of the municipal Fine Arts Office. The work included surface cleaning, plaster reintegration with lime-based materials, and protective treatments to prevent future deterioration.
Angeli del Bello volunteers supported the project by preparing the area and coordinating community outreach activities, continuing their work of caring for public spaces and monuments throughout the city.
Located between via di Camaldoli and Piazza Tasso, the tabernacle is one of many small devotional shrines that dot the Oltrarno. City officials said the restoration reflects Florence’s growing collaboration between civic institutions, private donors and community associations to preserve its historic urban landscape.
