Florence’s tram system reached a new record in October 2025, carrying more than 4.6 million passengers in a single month. According to municipal data, the network counted 4,635,570 journeys, around 200,000 more than the previous record set in May.
Both main lines showed growth. The T1 carried 2.68 million passengers, while the T2 almost reached 2 million, doubling its ridership since the start of 2025. The increase follows the opening of the VACS extension and the arrival of the T2 line in Piazza San Marco, which has strengthened connections with the historic centre.
The stop at Piazza della Libertà has also become a key interchange with city buses. The nearby Via Cavour, recently redeveloped with wider pavements and new orange trees, has seen heavier pedestrian use, creating a more accessible route into the centre.
City mobility councillor Andrea Giorgio said the expansion had confirmed the success of the tram project, noting that more than 18,000 people had joined a discounted public transport pass scheme, including 4,000 new subscribers who shifted from private vehicles.
Between January and October 2025, the tram network carried about 36.5 million passengers — up from 31.7 million in the same period of 2024. The city estimates that by the end of this year total ridership will approach 45 million journeys. That would mean an increase of nearly 10 million passengers in two years.
However, the rapid growth has also highlighted the limits of Florence’s road system. Traffic congestion continues to affect surface transport, and construction sites for the new tramway extensions are adding to delays in several areas, including the southern access routes and parts of the city centre. The municipality expects these disruptions to ease once the new sections are completed.
The upcoming lines — towards Bagno a Ripoli, Campi Bisenzio and Rovezzano — are intended to reduce dependence on private cars and link more neighbourhoods to the city’s rail network.
