First snowfall of the season reaches Tuscany’s Apennines

Abundant snowfall was recorded on 22 November across the Apennine passes north of Florence, marking the first significant winter episode of the season in Tuscany. Images released by the Civil Protection service of the Metropolitan City of Florence show fresh accumulations along the higher roads, where winter conditions arrived earlier than in previous years.

The heaviest snow was reported on the main mountain passes connecting the Tuscan side of the Apennines with Emilia-Romagna. Road crews from the Metropolitan City’s Viabilità service worked throughout the day with snowploughs and salt spreaders to keep the network open and ensure safe transit on the stretches under their responsibility.

Authorities remind drivers that winter equipment is mandatory on these routes and that conditions can change rapidly at higher elevations, even when the lowlands remain clear.
