Green Florence 2025 brings nature to Piazza Santa Croce

For a weekend at the end of September, one of Florence’s most iconic squares will be transformed into a vast green stage. From September 26 to 28, Piazza Santa Croce will host Green Florence 2025, an event that covers more than 3,000 square meters of lawn dotted with centuries-old olive trees. It is described as the largest installation of natural greenery ever created in an urban square in Europe.

The initiative is promoted by Confcommercio Firenze together with the Union of Farmers of Florence, under the patronage of the City of Florence and the Chamber of Commerce. The goal is to weave together environment, commerce, agriculture and culture, showing how the city’s historic beauty can coexist and even dialogue with nature without losing its identity.

The project is not just a scenic installation. For three days the square will become a lively meeting place with a full program of activities. Visitors will find cultural encounters, live music, theatre and street performances, as well as creative workshops for children. Food will also play a central role: an area dedicated to street food will be open daily from 11 a.m. to midnight, with food trucks serving traditional dishes, regional specialties and recipes for every taste, including vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Friday, September 26 at 10:30 a.m., with representatives of local institutions and the promoters present. After that, the piazza will open as an open-air garden where residents and tourists can experience Florence in an entirely new way.

Green Florence 2025 is more than a festival. It is a way of reimagining public space and exploring new ways to bring nature into the city, highlighting Florence’s ability to blend its artistic heritage with environmental awareness.
