Florence Tram Line T1 Back in Service After Track Replacement

The Florence tram line T1 will resume full service on Sunday, September 7, 2025, following the early completion of major maintenance works between Porta al Prato – Leopolda and Alamanni Stazione Santa Maria Novella.

The project focused on the curve between Viale Fratelli Rosselli and Via Iacopo da Diacceto, a section built in 2010 with a complex geometry that had suffered wear over time. Around 160 meters of rails were replaced along a 40-meter stretch. The works required the complete demolition and reconstruction of the civil structures, including the removal of porphyry paving, the cutting of the old switch, the installation of a new concrete base, and the laying of updated rails. All surface elements, from paving stones to drainage systems, were then carefully restored to preserve the original appearance of the area.

This was the most complex maintenance intervention ever carried out on Florence’s tram network. Despite some weather-related challenges, the works finished ahead of schedule, ensuring the line’s reopening before the start of the school year.

During the summer, many passengers experienced disruptions as the central section of the line remained closed, requiring alternative routes and longer travel times. The early reopening therefore comes as welcome news for both residents and commuters who rely on the tram every day.

Mayor Sara Funaro welcomed the result, noting that the tram system continues to grow in popularity. In the first six months of 2025 alone, it recorded 22.7 million passengers, a 20% increase compared to the previous year.

With the completion of these works, the T1 line will again connect Scandicci and Villa Costanza with the city center and Careggi without interruption, restoring one of the city’s key public transport links.
