A four-month pilot program introducing bodycams for railway security staff has officially launched in Tuscany. The initiative, part of a broader national effort by Ferrovie dello Stato (Italian State Railways), aims to enhance safety for both employees and passengers across the region’s key railway lines and stations.
The pilot involves ten body-worn cameras that will be used by FS Security personnel on a voluntary basis. The devices are designed to be activated only in the event of potentially dangerous situations. To ensure privacy and data integrity, the system prevents operators from viewing or deleting recorded footage. Instead, all video data will be securely managed and accessed only by authorized personnel.
The trial phase will run for four months and will help assess the effectiveness of the bodycams in preventing and managing aggressive behavior and violence on trains and in stations. If successful, the initiative could pave the way for a broader deployment of bodycams throughout Italy’s rail network.
This move reflects growing concern over safety in public transport and mirrors similar measures already adopted in other sectors and countries.
