The President of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani, has signed a declaration of a regional state of emergency following the severe weather that struck on Friday, March 14. The affected areas include the Metropolitan City of Florence and the provinces of Arezzo, Livorno, Lucca, Massa Carrara, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato, and Siena.
The decree underscores the severity and exceptional nature of the storm, which caused extensive damage across central and northern Tuscany. The regional government will later define specific measures to support the affected municipalities.
Estimated Damages Reach €100 Million
According to an initial assessment, damages are estimated at around €100 million. This figure was announced by President Giani during a meeting with Fabio Ciciliano, head of the National Civil Protection Department, on March 16.
The situation remains critical as further storms are expected over the weekend of March 22-23, which could worsen conditions in already vulnerable areas. “After this weekend, I will speak again with the head of National Civil Protection to assess the impact of the worsening weather,” Giani stated.
Valdisieve and Mugello Among Hardest-Hit Areas
The regions of Valdisieve and Mugello are among the most affected. According to the Florence prefecture, nearly 200 people were left isolated, and 24 were evacuated due to floods and landslides.
The municipalities experiencing the most severe difficulties include Borgo San Lorenzo, Barberino di Mugello, Dicomano, Firenzuola, Londa, Marradi, Palazzuolo sul Senio, Pontassieve, and Vicchio. Authorities are working to restore access to isolated areas and provide assistance to affected residents.
The Tuscany Region is coordinating emergency responses and assessing the need for further national support as the situation develops. Residents are advised to stay informed through official channels and follow safety recommendations.
