FLORENCE, ITALY – Fiorentina delivered a resounding 6-0 thrashing of Lecce at the Stadio Via del Mare, marking a dominant performance and a historic result for the visitors. This was the first time since October 9, 1966, that Fiorentina had scored six goals in a Serie A away match, when they secured a 6-2 victory against Venezia. Lecce, on the other hand, faced a humiliating defeat, conceding six goals in a Serie A match for the first time since March 1, 2020, when they lost 7-2 at home to Atalanta.

Fiorentina’s Italian Firepower Shines

Fiorentina’s attack was spearheaded by a collective effort from their Italian players, who scored five of the six goals—a feat the club hadn’t achieved in Serie A since September 11, 1983, in a match against Napoli. On that occasion, Gabriele Oriali and Pasquale Iachini were among the goal-scorers, with Paolo Monelli netting a hat-trick.

Cataldi’s Stunning Double

Danilo Cataldi stood out with a spectacular brace, both goals coming from outside the box. This performance made him the seventh Fiorentina player in the last 20 Serie A seasons to score twice from long range in the same match. The last to do so was Cristiano Biraghi on January 17, 2022, against Genoa.

Cataldi’s goals highlight his unique ability to score from distance. Since Opta began tracking shot data in 2004/05, Cataldi ranks second in terms of the percentage of goals scored from outside the box, with 80% of his goals coming from long range, behind only Gökhan Inler (93%) and ahead of Andrea Pirlo (77%).

Andrea Colpani’s Impact

Andrea Colpani was another standout performer, contributing two goals and an assist. His involvement in three goals marks the second time a Fiorentina player has had such an impact in a single Serie A match since the start of last season, following Riccardo Sottil’s performance against Sassuolo on April 28, 2023. Colpani also scored his first away goal in Serie A since June 4, 2023, breaking a streak of eight consecutive home goals.

Parisi’s and Beltrán’s Contributions

Fabiano Parisi, who came on as a substitute, added to the scoreline, making Lecce the unfortunate victims of two of his three career Serie A goals. His strike also marked the first time he scored as a substitute in Serie A.

Lucas Beltrán also enjoyed a standout performance, scoring two goals. Both of these came at the Via del Mare, making Lecce the first team against whom he has scored more than once in Serie A.

Set-Piece Success and Lecce’s Struggles

Fiorentina’s dominance extended to set pieces, with two of the four direct free-kick goals in this Serie A season coming from the Viola. Lecce, however, has now conceded two direct free-kick goals this season, further highlighting their defensive woes.

An emphatic win

This emphatic win solidifies Fiorentina’s attacking credentials while exposing Lecce’s vulnerabilities at the back. Fiorentina will look to carry this momentum forward as they aim to climb the Serie A table, while Lecce faces the challenge of regrouping after such a heavy defeat.
