FLORENCE, ITALY – A strong earthquake was reported in several areas of northern Tuscany and other Italian regions at around 12:30 local time on June 21, 2013. The tremor was felt in Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Lombardy, Piedmont, Veneto and Liguria.

The Italian 5.2-magnitude earthquake felt on Friday, causing damage in rural areas and some injuries, prompting local authorities to prepare makeshift accommodation in anticipation of coming aftershocks.

The epicentre of the earthquake was located between the towns of Massa and Lucca in Tuscany and La Spezia in the Liguria region. The Civil Protection Department in Tuscany said buildings had been damaged in the towns of Lungiana, Fivizzano and Casole. Aftershocks continued during the course of the following days, with some reaching magnitude 4.0, according to local authorities.
