Confiscation of false extra virgin olive oil

Olive-OilFLORENCE, ITALY – Nas searches and confiscation of false extra virgin olive oil, in Tuscany, Emilia and Lazio; 17 under investigation. The people investigated are charged with criminal organization for commercial frauds regarding the sophistication and adulteration of extra virgin olive oil.

Searches have been carried out by Carabinieri’ s special bodies in Florence and Pistoia. Over 2500 liters of oil with no traceability have been confiscated and 5000 liters of adulterated oil registered as extra virgin.

Olive oil is a fat obtained from the olive (the fruit of Olea europaea; family Oleaceae), a traditional tree crop of the Mediterranean Basin. The oil is produced by grinding whole olives and extracting the oil by mechanical or chemical means. It is commonly used in cooking, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and soaps and as a fuel for traditional oil lamps. Olive oil is used throughout the world, but especially in the Mediterranean countries.
