Piazza Duomo, 3D model on Google maps

FLORENCE, ITALY – Google has recently enhanced over 1,000 famous landmarks in all over the world within its Google Maps application for desktop browsers as well as handheld devices.

The new Google Maps is has more details of the world’s major tourist places. Structures like the Piazza del Duomo, Florence, Italy, that were once just grey box on the screen, now get more dynamic shapes with more detailed 3D model.

For example, the new design of the Piazza Duomo map has a “real” dome, whereas before, unless you studied Italian architecture, it was not possible to know the structure.

The changes make for more attractive maps, but could also prove useful when navigating by making landmarks easier to recognise.
