Florence 16th destination in the world for NYT

Loggia dei LanziAmong the 45 places to go in 2012, New York Times choose Florence, Italy in 16th position. “A Renaissance city gets a contemporary kick”, observes the american newspaper in a world travel review.

According to the author of the review, Ingrid K. Williams, “since 2009, Florence’s youthful mayor, Matteo Renzi, has championed efforts to build a livable, living city that celebrates its rich history and historic riches. The result? An energized arts scene unfolding inside various medieval palazzi, ancient landmarks restored and reopened to the public for the first time in decades and restaurants abandoning traditional Tuscan staples for sophisticated contemporary food”.

New York Times remarks, above all, the success of Center for Contemporary Culture La Strozzina in Palazzo Strozzi, “a destination for must-see events” like the coming “Americans in Florence: Sargent and the American Impressionists,” which opens in March.

The american paper suggests even “Spazi Urbani Contemporanei, an arts space occupying a 15th-century former monastery, now features works from emerging Italian artists”, a visit to the San Niccolò tower re-opened to the public and in the brand new Gucci Museum in piazza Signoria.

In accomodation New York Times reports St. Regis Florence, which re-opened in May in the Grand hotel place and Villa Cora, in food NYT suggests Osteria personale and Ossi di Seppia.
