Florence Has Italy’s Second-Highest Reported Crime Rate, Despite 2.9% Decline

Florence recorded the second-highest rate of reported crime in Italy in 2025, despite a 2.9% decrease compared with the previous year, according to the latest Crime Index published by financial newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore on Monday, 12 October, 2026.

The province registered 6,374 reported offences per 100,000 residents, placing it behind Milan and ahead of Rome. Milan recorded more than 7,000 reports per 100,000 inhabitants.

Two other Tuscan provinces also appeared in the national top ten: Prato ranked eighth and Livorno tenth. The figures refer to entire provinces, rather than just their main cities, and are calculated in relation to the resident population.

Across Italy, reported offences fell by 1.8% in 2025, the first annual decline after four consecutive years of increases. Police recorded approximately 2.36 million offences, around 42,000 fewer than in 2024.

The decrease was driven mainly by thefts, which fell by 5.9%, and robberies, down 3.6%. However, reports of scams and online fraud increased by 4.4%, reaching almost 299,000 cases nationwide.

The number of intentional homicides also declined, from 326 in 2024 to 289 in 2025.

The rankings are based on official police statistics compiled by Italy’s Interior Ministry and compare 106 provincial areas. They measure crimes reported to the authorities, rather than all crimes committed, and do not necessarily reflect individual residents’ risk of becoming victims.

Provisional figures for the first half of 2026 suggest a further 9.9% decline in reported crime across Italy compared with the same period last year.
