The wait is almost over for viewers looking for a glimpse of Tuscany in The Diplomat. The fourth season of the Netflix political drama will be released on October 15, 2026, with Florence, Lucca and other Tuscan locations appearing in the new episodes.
Created by Debora Cahn and starring Keri Russell as US diplomat Kate Wyler, the series combines international crises and White House politics with the increasingly complicated relationship between Kate and her husband Hal, played by Rufus Sewell.
Production of the fourth season took place between November 2025 and June 2026, with filming in London, New York and Tuscany. The Tuscan part of the production was supported by the Toscana Film Commission.
Florence and Lucca become filming locations
Filming in Tuscany took place between May and June, involving Florence, Lucca and the surrounding area.
Lucca provided some of the most visible locations. Crews worked in Piazza Napoleone, Porta San Pietro, Piazza San Frediano, Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, Piazza Guidiccioni and Via Sant’Andrea.
For part of the filming, the historic centre was transformed into the setting for an informal G7 summit, complete with flags, official-looking signs and black cars. The set was convincing enough that some passers-by initially thought an actual international meeting was taking place.
The production also filmed at the Villa Reale di Marlia, a historic villa and park a few kilometres north of Lucca.
Florence was also used during the production, although the specific locations chosen for the finished episodes have not been publicly disclosed. According to the Toscana Film Commission, the production used the Starhotels Teatro Luxury Apartments in Florence as a base.
Viewers will now be able to see how those Tuscan locations have been incorporated into the story when the new season is released.
Political crises and a marriage under pressure
The Diplomat follows Kate Wyler, an experienced American diplomat whose work repeatedly places her at the centre of international crises.
Season 3 ended with a major shift in Washington. Following the death of the US president, former vice-president Grace Penn, played by Allison Janney, became president. Kate, meanwhile, found herself navigating a new political landscape while her relationship with Hal remained complicated by their competing ambitions and political manoeuvring.
Season 4 picks up from those events, with Kate facing new questions about the relationship between Hal and President Penn and the consequences of decisions made behind her back.
The series will again centre on the four characters played by Russell, Sewell, Janney and Bradley Whitford, who plays First Gentleman Todd Penn.
All episodes of The Diplomat Season 4 are due to be available on Netflix from October 15, 2026.
