Historic villas and palaces across Tuscany are the focus of the 11th edition of Wiki Loves Monuments Tuscany, the regional edition of the international photography competition dedicated to documenting cultural heritage.
The competition runs from 1 to 30 September 2026 and is free to enter. Professional photographers and amateurs can take part by uploading photographs of eligible monuments through the Wiki Loves Monuments web app. Photographs taken previously can also be entered, provided they are uploaded during September.
This year’s thematic category is dedicated to historic villas and palaces, highlighting buildings connected with Tuscany’s cultural, artistic, civic and political history. The Italian competition is organised by Wikimedia Italia in collaboration with the Italian Federation of Photographic Associations (FIAF), with the patronage of ANCI, Italy’s national association of municipalities.
Photographs submitted to the competition are published under a free licence on Wikimedia Commons, the online media repository used by Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.
How to take part
Participants can use the competition’s online map to find eligible monuments and upload their photographs directly from a phone or computer. No separate app needs to be downloaded.
The web app also shows cultural sites taking part in the competition, helping photographers identify buildings in their area.
The Tuscany competition will select 10 winning photographs at regional level. Images entered in local competitions also take part in the wider Italian competition, where the 10 photographs selected by the national jury will represent Italy in the international contest.
More than 47,600 photographs of Tuscany
Wiki Loves Monuments Tuscany has collected more than 47,600 photographs from 626 photographers over its previous ten editions.
The figures are part of a much larger international archive. Globally, Wiki Loves Monuments has generated more than 3.6 million photographs from almost 120,000 participants. In 2025 alone, around 4,000 photographers submitted more than 233,500 images through 56 national competitions.
Wikimedia Italia has organised the Italian edition since 2012. More than 11,000 people have participated in Italy since then, contributing over 300,000 photographs to Wikimedia Commons and documenting almost 47,000 monuments and cultural sites. According to the organisers, photographs from the Italian competition have received more than one billion views on Wikipedia pages in 81 languages.
