Netflix’s The Diplomat to film fourth season in Lucca and Florence

Lucca

Lucca is preparing to host filming for the fourth season of Netflix political drama The Diplomat, with crews set to work in some of the city’s best-known historic locations on 13 and 14 May 2026.

The production will transform parts of Lucca’s historic centre into an open-air film set, with scenes scheduled in Piazza Napoleone, Porta San Pietro, Piazza San Frediano, Piazza Anfiteatro, Piazza Guidiccioni and Via Sant’Andrea. Additional filming is planned in other parts of the municipality between 4 and 7 June 2026.

The series, created by Emmy-nominated writer Debora Cahn, stars Keri Russell as US ambassador Kate Wyler and Rufus Sewell as her husband Hal Wyler. Since its debut in 2023, the Netflix drama has become one of the platform’s most widely watched international productions, combining diplomatic crises, political intrigue and personal relationships.

The new season will also film in the Florence area until 19 June 2026, with support from the Toscana Film Commission.

Agreement with the city

Given the scale of the production, the Municipality of Lucca approved a formal agreement with the international production company to regulate permits, use of public spaces and municipal buildings, as well as temporary scenic installations that will later be removed.

Mayor Mario Pardini and tourism councillor Remo Santini said the project represented another important international showcase for Lucca and Tuscany, with possible positive effects for tourism and the local economy.

Practical information

The filming schedule will bring temporary changes to traffic and parking across the city centre.

Residents and visitors should expect temporary disruptions in several parts of Lucca’s historic centre on 13 and 14 May, especially around the main piazzas and city gates used as filming locations.

The Municipality of Lucca said temporary traffic and parking measures may be adjusted depending on production needs and weather conditions.
