The exhibition Toulouse-Lautrec. A journey into the Paris of the Belle Époque at the Museo degli Innocenti has been extended until 7 June 2026, following strong public demand and visitor numbers exceeding 100,000.
The show, which opened on 27 September 2025, is dedicated to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901), the French painter, illustrator and graphic innovator known for his vivid depictions of nightlife in late 19th-century Paris.
More than 170 works on display
Hosted in the historic complex designed by Filippo Brunelleschi in central Florence, the exhibition features more than 170 works, including colour lithographs, advertising posters, drawings and illustrations.
Among the most recognisable images on display are Jane Avril (1893), Aristide Bruant dans son cabaret (1893) and Troupe de Mademoiselle Églantine (1896), which helped redefine poster art and commercial graphics at the end of the 19th century. Works come in part from collections in Hamburg and from the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec in Albi, the artist’s birthplace in southern France.
Toulouse-Lautrec is widely associated with the bohemian atmosphere of Montmartre and venues such as the Moulin Rouge, which he frequented and portrayed in his work. His images documented performers, dancers and café-concert culture, but also revealed the more complex and less glamorous sides of Parisian nightlife.
A broader look at the Belle Époque
The Florence exhibition places Toulouse-Lautrec within the wider cultural context of the Belle Époque and Art Nouveau. Alongside his works, visitors can see pieces by artists such as Alphonse Mucha, Jules Chéret and Georges de Feure, highlighting the development of modern graphic design and visual culture across Europe.
The display also includes period photographs, video installations, costumes and furnishings, designed to evoke Paris between 1880 and 1900 — a period marked by rapid urban change, technological innovation and the rise of mass entertainment.
