Florence cathedral museum launches free audio guide app for visitors

A new digital audio guide is now available for visitors to the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo in Florence. The app, called OperaGuide, can be downloaded free of charge and provides narrated content in Italian and English.

Developed by the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, which manages the cathedral complex, the audio guide accompanies visitors through the museum’s collection with commentary recorded by a professional actress. The narration explains each work’s origin, author and patron, historical and liturgical context, iconography and specific meanings.

In addition to the audio content, the app gives access to extra digital services, including online ticketing, links to in-depth material on the Opera’s website, frequently asked questions and other visitor information.

Two different visit options are available from the app’s home screen. The full route covers around 225 works and takes approximately two hours and 15 minutes. A shorter route, titled “Per Sommi Capi”, focuses on 26 of the museum’s best-known works and is designed to last about one hour.

According to the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, the app has been designed so that it can be extended in the future to other monuments in Piazza del Duomo.

The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo houses original works and major sculptures from Florence Cathedral, Giotto’s Bell Tower and the Baptistery, and is a key stop for visitors seeking historical context alongside the city’s most famous religious buildings.
