56 Baby Loggerhead Turtles Hatch on the Beaches of Marina di Pisa

A special night on the Tuscan coast: 56 baby loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) emerged from their nest on the beach of Marina di Pisa. The hatching took place near the bathing establishment Alba Big Fish, where the nest had been discovered on June 27.

Since that day, volunteers and staff from several organizations have been working around the clock to safeguard the nest. The moment of birth was first noticed by two long-time volunteers, Costanza and Marco, who were on duty overnight and saw the characteristic crater forming in the sand before the hatchlings appeared.

The event quickly drew the local community, who shared in the unique spectacle of nature. It also highlighted the value of scientific monitoring and public participation. The Park of Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli, which last year was named a “Friend of the Turtles” for its involvement in the EU-funded Life Turtlenest project coordinated by Legambiente, emphasized the importance of protecting Tuscany’s coastline as a potential nesting ground.

Monitoring of the nest will continue in the coming days in case of further hatchings. Legambiente Pisa and project coordinator Yuri Galletti thanked all those involved, including volunteers, UISP Village, Bagno Alba Big Fish, ARPAT, Marco Zuffi of the Museum of Natural History in Calci, as well as the Municipality of Pisa and Pisamo.
