A major fire broke out over the weekend at the Viper Theatre, one of Florence’s best-known live music venues, causing extensive damage and forcing the closure of the building just as the autumn season was about to begin.
The blaze started on the evening of Saturday, August 23, and quickly spread to the roof of the theatre, located on Via Lombardia near the Piagge area on the western outskirts of Florence. Firefighters began operations around 9 p.m., working through the night with multiple teams, ladders, water trucks, and even a tracked robot to contain the flames. Despite their efforts, part of the roof collapsed and the structure suffered severe damage.
In the early hours of Sunday, city authorities, following advice from the regional health agency (Asl Toscana Centro) and environmental agency (Arpat), urged residents in nearby neighborhoods—including Piagge, Brozzi, Peretola, San Donnino, Mantignano, and Ugnano—to keep windows closed and avoid outdoor activities to limit exposure to smoke.
By Monday morning, August 25, the fire was finally extinguished. The City of Florence announced that the air quality had returned to safe levels and revoked the precautionary measures. Operations to secure the site and investigate the causes of the fire are continuing.
According to the Viper Theatre’s management, the flames originated outside the building but later reignited after an initial intervention. Artistic director Marco Caciagli explained that the modern insulated roof made it particularly difficult to put out the fire completely.
The incident has put the venue’s upcoming season at risk. The theatre wrote in a public statement that the scale of the damage means it is uncertain whether concerts and events planned for the coming weeks can go ahead.
Mayor Sara Funaro expressed solidarity with the staff and promised the city’s support, calling the Viper “a vital space for music, culture, and social life” in Florence. Together with youth policies councillor Letizia Perini, she will visit the site this week to assess the damage.
For now, the flames are out, but the future of the Viper Theatre remains uncertain.
