The Netflix original series The Monster of Florence by Stefano Sollima will premiere out of competition at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival. The four-part series is scheduled to screen in the “Fuori Concorso – Series” section on September 4 and 6 across several venues of the Biennale.

The project, created by Sollima with Leonardo Fasoli and produced by Fremantle’s The Apartment and AlterEgo, revisits one of Italy’s darkest true-crime stories: the serial murders attributed to the so-called “Monster of Florence.” Between 1968 and 1985, eight double homicides were committed in the Tuscan countryside using a .22 caliber Beretta. The case remains unsolved and is remembered as one of the longest and most controversial investigations in Italian history.

Sollima explained that the aim of the series is not to provide explanations or solutions, but to reconstruct the origins of the case with honesty and rigor. The trailer, already released online, highlights the “Sardinian lead,” one of the most debated lines of inquiry pursued by investigators at the time.

The cast includes Marco Bullitta, Valentino Mannias, Francesca Olia, Liliana Bottone, Giacomo Fadda, Antonio Tintis and Giordano Mannu. The series will launch on Netflix on October 22, coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the streaming platform’s arrival in Italy.

Florence Daily News has previously followed the development of the project, from Netflix’s first teaser earlier this year to the announcement of its release date. With its Venice premiere, the production now enters the international spotlight, bringing back to screens a case that marked Tuscany’s recent history and continues to attract global attention.
