On the evening of Monday, April 21, 2025, the city of Florence gathered in solemn remembrance of Pope Francis, who passed away that morning at the age of 88. Hundreds of citizens, clergy, and civic leaders filled the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata for a prayer vigil led by Archbishop Gherardo Gambelli. The basilica, Florence’s principal Marian sanctuary, held special significance as it was visited by Pope Francis in 2015 during his pastoral trip to the city.

At midday, the city’s bells tolled in mourning, signaling the Pope’s passing. By evening, the basilica was filled to capacity, with many attendees standing in the cloister outside, listening through amplifiers. A photograph of Pope Francis was placed on the altar, surrounded by candles, as the congregation sang hymns like “O Santissima,” their voices accompanied by the organ. The atmosphere was one of deep reflection and unity.

The vigil was attended by a diverse assembly, including regional and city officials such as President of Tuscany Eugenio Giani, Mayor Sara Funaro, and former Mayor Dario Nardella. Religious leaders from various faiths were present, including Cardinal Giuseppe Betori, Cardinal Ernest Simoni, and Imam Izzedin Elzir, reflecting Pope Francis’s commitment to interfaith dialogue. Representatives from the Caritas Foundation and the Misericordie of Florence also participated, honoring the Pope’s dedication to the marginalized and his emphasis on charity as central to the Gospel.

In a gesture of mourning, a black drape was hung from Palazzo Vecchio, and flags were flown at half-mast. The city continues to honor Pope Francis’s legacy, with further commemorations expected in the coming days. As of now, no additional public events in Florence have been announced.

Pope Francis’s funeral is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, in Rome. His body will lie in state at the Vatican, allowing the faithful to pay their respects. A conclave to elect his successor is anticipated to convene between May 5 and May 10.

Florence mourns the loss of a spiritual leader who touched the lives of many with his humility, compassion, and unwavering commitment to social justice.
