From March 14, 2025, contemporary art will take center stage in Piazza della Signoria with “Time Unfolding,” the monumental bronze sculpture by British artist Thomas J Price. The four-meter-high artwork depicts a young woman in a natural and everyday pose, without a pedestal, resting directly on the stones of the square. Its presence starkly contrasts with the mythical and heroic imagery evoked by the surrounding Renaissance masterpieces, such as Michelangelo’s David, Cellini’s Perseus, and Ammannati’s Neptune.
The installation is part of the Museo Novecento’s exhibition program for spring-summer 2025 and stands as the highlight of the season. In parallel with the sculpture in Piazza della Signoria, another bronze piece will be placed in the courtyard of the Museo Novecento, while a 3.6-meter golden sculpture will interact with the permanent collection of Palazzo Vecchio.
Thomas J Price is internationally renowned for his large-scale figurative sculptures that explore social perception and the value of the individual. Through a skillful balance of traditional and digital techniques, the British artist investigates the symbolic power of materials and subverts hierarchical structures of representation. His works, often inspired by anonymous and ordinary figures, invite the public to reflect on identity and presence in public spaces.
With this exhibition, Florence reaffirms its openness to the dialogue between contemporary art and historical heritage, offering visitors a unique opportunity to engage with new forms of expression in the heart of the Renaissance city.
