FLORENCE, ITALY – The British prime minister Theresa May chose the Italian city of Florence for the keynote speech on the state of negotiations between the UK and Europe regarding Brexit.

May will speak in Florence on Friday, September 22, 2017 to update on Brexit negotiations, the prime minister’s spokesman said. Downing street gave no further details of what the prime minister would be saying in the Tuscan city. May will be travelling even to other Italian cities, but the list of attendees has yet to be announced.

Florence Mayor Dario Nardella expressed in a tweet a great appreciation for the choice of the British premier.

“The UK has had deep cultural and economic ties spanning centuries with Florence, a city known for its historical trading power. As the UK leaves the EU, we will retain those close ties. As the prime minister has said on many occasions, we are leaving the EU, not Europe,” May spokesman said, according to the British newspapar The Guardian.
