FLORENCE, ITALY – LPD convenes some of the world’s foremost scholars, policy makers, practitioners, business leaders, public intellectuals and artists whose ideas and work have made a significant cultural or intellectual contribution to global society and the revival of the spirit of humanism for which Florence is known. GENERATION JOBLESS:

Youth Unemployment in Europe and the US

Youth unemployment is on the rise across the world. The crisis is worrisome for a number of reasons, in particular, its geographi- cal dispersion, the general ageing of the population in OECD countries, and the negative consequences for individuals, society and the economy. LPD will take a recent study by the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Condi- tions that focuses on a particular aspect of the youth labor market – young people who are not in employment, education or training (NEETs) – as the centerpiece for a dialogue on the evo- lution of the phenomenon of youth unemployment and on the different patterns across EU countries, taking the U.S. as a useful benchmark. Continuing our focus on economics, Chinese labor activist and founder of the China Labour Bulletin Han Dongfang will engage in a dialogue with students about labour issues in China today. He will be introduced by Prof. Giampiero Gallo, NYU Florence.
